Where do I go?

You find us in Sumner near the corner of Stoke St and Esplanade, Sumner. Look for the Learn to Surf trailer with the Yellow surfboard on the roof parked opposite 56 Esplanade, Sumner. Directions here. Please arrive about 5-10 min before your lesson time.

What do I bring?

Just bring your togs (swim suit) and a towel. We’ll provide wetsuits and surfboard. Also bring sunscreen, water, snacks and warm clothing.

When are your lessons?

Our Learn to Surf classes run Saturday and Sundays at 1pm plus every day over the summer holidays. You can also book Private lessons at anytime. We also have specific classes for kids on Sundays and school holidays and an after school programme for teenagers during school terms 1 and 4.

Do I need to book?

Yes. Class numbers are limited. You can book online here or call us on 0800 80 SURF (7873) or email, then fill out a online registration form.

What if I can’t swim?

You do not need to be a strong swimmer to Learn to Surf. Our first lessons are only in waist deep water. Just let our instructor know if you are not a strong swimmer. For more advanced lessons we recommend you can swim at least 50 m and 200 m for bigger waves and out the back lessons.

What if the weather is bad?

Lessons go ahead in most weathers. We will contact you if the lesson is cancelled. Don’t let the rain put you off, you’ll be getting wet anyway. The waves are often at there best on a cold, wet day. We have warm wetsuits. We will cancel a class if conditions are unsafe. The most common reason we do cancel is due to strong winds.

What age do you need to be?

Our lessons are for 8 years and up.

What if I can’t make my lesson?

Please let us know as soon as possible if you can’t make your lesson. We require 24 hr cancelation notice or you forfeit that lesson. Please see our Terms and Conditions.

How many people in a class?

We like to have one instructor for every six students (1:6). Class sizes vary but you’ll always get plenty of individual attention. The ISA recommend a 1:8 ratio but we like to go better than that.

I’m not very fit / a good swimmer / nervous. Will I be able to do it?

Yes. Any one can Learn to Surf. We start slowly and take it step by step. Everyone progresses at their own rate. Our instructors are encouraging and make sure you have plenty of fun. The great thing about surfing is its just as much fun wiping out as it is standing up.

How long is the lesson?

Lessons are two hours including briefing, changing and water time. Please arrive about 5-10 min before your lesson time.

Can I use my Bonus Two hour Hire another day?

Unfortunately no. the bonus two hours hire must be used immediately after your first lesson.

How many lessons will I need?

Everyone progresses are a different rate but most people find four lessons will give them all the essential skills. Your first lesson teaches paddling and standing plus safety. We try to get most people up in their first lesson. From there the second lesson refines your get up technique and the third lesson we start to turn. Your fourth lesson we’re trying to get onto green faced waves and surf out the back. Its always a good idea to practice between lessons by hiring the gear.

How quickly will I be able to stand?

Some people get up on their first wave other take a bit more time, but everyone gets there in the end.
