Our team are all great people who are passionate about surfing. They’ve been handpicked because they’re great teachers with a good technical surfing knowledge. They’ll make sure you’re having a fun, safe, friendly time whilst making sure you’re progressing your skills as quickly as possible.

Aaron Lock aka Lockie

Aaron LockAaron Lock is the principle instructor and founder of the business based in Sumner.
Age: 39 Years surfing : 29 Years coaching : 19 Stance : Goofy
Aaron is one of New Zealand’s top competitive Bodyboarders and has many competition titles to his name. He is also a successful surfing competitor. He splits his surfing time between Shortboarding, Longboarding and Bodyboarding.
Aaron has been coaching Surfing and Bodyboarding for over 19 years. He is a qualified International Surf Assoc.(ISA) Level 2 Surf Coach and Coaching New Zealand Level 2 Coach. He is current coach of the Canterbury Scholastic Surf Team.
Aaron is trained in First Aid and Surf Lifesaving.
Aaron is a ISA Level One Surf Judge and is regularly involved in Judging and Administrating local and national surfing competitions.

Ambrose McNeil

Ambrose McNeilAmbrose has been coaching with us for over 6 years. He is a great surf coach with a happy personality. Ambrose teaches all levels and all ages of surfers.
Ambrose is a top Longboard surfer and competes on the New Zealand Longboard tour.
Ambrose was teaching in France for the 2009 winter and just finished studying at Canterbury University for a Degree in Sport Science and Diploma in teaching.
In 2012 and 2013 he was coach of the Canterbury Scholastic Surf team and continues to develop his high performance coaching doing an internship at the Surfing Australia HPC last year.

Bradely King

Bradely KingBrad is a fantastic surfer, musician, designer and all round good guy. Brad never seems to get down and is always amping to go surfing. Brad was our Rookie of the year in 2012 and continues to be one of our top coaches. You’re always guaranteed a fun lesson with Brad.

Alethea Lock

Alethea LockAlethea is Aaron and Lana’s daughter. She had no choice but to get into surfing at a young age and is now ones of New Zealands top female surfers. She traveled to the World Junior Surf Champs in Panama in 2012. She is studying at Otago Uni and works the summers in the surf school.

Douglas Nikolaison

doug profileDouglas has been coaching with us for three seasons. He’s 21 years old and has been surfing since he was 12 years old. Doug lives out Wooedend Beach and is part of the North Sdie boardriders. He more of a free surfer than a competitor and is into skating and snowboarding when the surfs flat. Dougie loves to travel and went to Uruguay and Brazil over the winter.

Monia Fromentien

Monia FromentienMonia is French – Moroccan. She’s a trained gymnast and circus performer. The techniques she’s learnt at gymnastics are a great way to help you improve your surfing balance and agility. Monia was our Rookie of the Year in 2013. Monia is also a snowboarding instructor. During the winter Monia returns to the fantastic waves in the south of France. Monia will be coaching at Sumner and also at The Surf Shed in New Brighton.

Mike Fanning

Mike FanningMike is one of our most experienced instructors , coaching since 2005. He has a wealth of technical knowledge and is great for intermediate and advanced coaching. Mike is a skilled skater, snowboarder and musician. Mike is the main instructor at The Surf Shed in New Brighton.
Mike also works as a surf judge at many New Zealand competitions.

Neill Robb

Neill RobbNeill is the newest member of our team starting coaching in 2010. He also happens to be the eldest team member but still a grommett at heart.
Neill is a highly skilled shortboard surfer with several National and South Island titles to his name.
Neill is great with the technical aspects of surfing, so if you’re having trouble perfecting your bottom turn or cutback he’s the one to talk to.

Lucy Hodgson

Lucy HodgsonLucy has been working with us for 3 years. Originally from England, Lucy now lives in Sumner and is the keenest surfer ever.
Lucy is passionate about the outdoors. She is a PADI Dive Master, qualified canoe guide and mountain guide and is also an accomplished Stand Up Paddle boarder.
Lucy also worked at the Exit Surf shop so is a great person to talk to for surfboard advice. Lucy is now a Primary School teacher.

Lana Lock

Lana LockLana has been involved with surfing for over 18 years. As Aarons wife she has been traveling to surfing comp’s and beaches for the last 22 years.
Lana loves the ocean with fishing one of her passions and is getting into SUP boarding.
Whilst Lana is not a top surfer her love of the ocean and people skills make her a great coach. She is especially good with young children and also adult clients who are having difficulty mastering the sport.
